10 Ways to Prep for Your First Barre Class

New to barre? We have you covered! Whether it’s your very first barre class or your first time back after a break, these ten tips will help prepare you for a great experience.

1. Arrive Early

Do your best to arrive 10–15 minutes before the start of your Bar Method class to get all set up. You’ll fill out a new client form, take a tour of the studio and meet your instructor. Be sure to share any injuries, pregnancy or special circumstances with your instructor so that he or she can recommend the best modifications (should you need them) to ensure the workout is safe and effective for you.

Wondering what to expect? Every Bar Method class starts with a warm-up, upper-body exercises and push-ups in the middle of the room, followed by a sequence of leg work at the barre and core exercises on the floor. You’ll predominantly use your own bodyweight as resistance along with a few basic props, like free weights, mats and a ball. We help students of all levels work within their individual limits while receiving encouragement to continually push forward to meet their goals.

2. Dress the Part

We recommend that you wear stretchy pants or leggings that fall below your knees for maximum flexibility during class. We also suggest wearing a breathable top that allows you to move more freely. Keep in mind that our studios are carpeted, and we include certain exercises and stretches that involve positioning yourself on the floor. Wearing soft, stretchy clothing that covers your knees and midriff can help you stay comfortable the entire time.

3. Wear Grippy Socks

Have you ever tried to hold a 60-second plank wearing socks without grip? You don’t want to — trust us! Bring or buy a pair of sticky socks or grippy socks so you can ease your way into second position like a pro. 4. Be Patient

Let’s face it: barre isn’t easy. If you don’t already know that, you will find out quickly at your first class! Whether you’ve taken a break for the winter or are trying it for the first time, you’ll most likely struggle to get through that first hour. Just be patient and give yourself the time and space you need to learn the movements. Stick with it, and you’ll see results in no time!

5. Trust Your Instructor

It’s so important to speak with your Bar Method instructor about your goals, struggles, and limitations. Our instructors undergo a lengthy and rigorous training process that includes lessons of anatomy and adjustments, which enables them to assist you verbally and physically throughout each class. 

Our #1 goal is to inspire you to be your absolute best, and we want to make sure our students receive personalized adjustments, modifications, and encouragement to get the most out of every workout. 

Pro Tip: The Bar Method is unique to other barre classes; it’s truly a method and was created under the guidance of physical therapists to ensure it’s safe and effective for students spanning a wide range of abilities — including those with physical limitations and injuries. 

6. Book Another Class

You’ll more than likely be sore after your first barre class, but the best cure is coming back for more! Your body will love all of the active stretches at the barre, and you’ll be hooked before you know it. We recommend taking a Bar Method class three to five times per week to get the best overall results. 

Pro Tip: After your first barre class, be sure to drink plenty of water so your muscles stay hydrated as they recover. 

7. Follow Along on Instagram

Lots of Bar Method studios have their own Instagram accounts, which makes it easy to connect with your local trainers and classmates. You can also follow our official Instagram account for inspirational stories, motivational quotes, technique demonstrations, and more!

8. Embrace the Shake

At The Bar Method, we encourage our students to always embrace “the shake,” which refers to the shaking your muscles experience during our targeted moves. While feeling your muscles shaking during your barre routine isn’t the most comfortable thing, it means that your body is in the process of change — and that’s definitely something to celebrate! 

9. Bring a Friend

There’s nothing more fun than witnessing your friend shake through a set of thigh exercises right alongside you. Everyone remembers their first time! Although excruciating, the burn and the shake are things we learn to love and crave. Do your friends a favor and invite them into your secret hiding place! Besides, it’s no secret that friends who shake together, stay together.

10. Familiarize Yourself with COVID-19 Policies
