7 Tips for your First Barre Class
October 3, 2017
Starting a new workout or fitness routine can be both exciting and daunting. Whether it’s your first class or first class back in a while, these 7 tips will prepare you for a great experience in a Bar Method class:
1. Arrive Early
Arrive 10-15 minutes before the start of class to get all set up. You’ll fill out a new client form, take a tour of the studio, and meet your instructor. Be sure to share any injuries, pregnancy or special circumstances with your instructor so that he or she can recommend the best modifications, should you need them, to ensure the workout is safe and effective.
2. Wear the Proper Attire
We get very “hands-on” at The Bar Method and recommend you wear leggings that fall below your knees and a breathable top that covers your midriff. Not only that, but our studios are carpeted and we have some exercises and stretches that involve positions down on your knees. You will be more comfortable with the proper attire!
3. Bring Grip Socks
Have you ever tried to hold a 60 second plank wearing socks without grip? You don’t want to, trust us! Bring or buy grip socks so you can ease your way down into second position like a pro. Bonus: you’ll be more inclined to lift your feet in flat-back to not only prevent losing the grip off your socks, but to also get the abs of your dreams. #liftyourfeet #saveyoursocks #flattenyourabs
4. Be Patient
Let’s face it, barre is not easy, whether you have taken a break for the summer or are trying it for the first time. You will most likely struggle to get through that first hour. But be patient with yourself. Give yourself the space to learn and the acknowledgement that you don’t know what you’re doing but very soon you will. Stick with it!
5. Trust Your Instructor
Tell him or her about your goals, struggles, and limitations. Bar Method instructors are trained to assist you verbally and physically throughout class. Our #1 goal is to inspire you to be your absolute best. Now lift your head and look in the mirror to see that potential in yourself. You’ve got this!
6. Book Another Class
You may be sore but the best cure is coming back for more! Your body will love all of the active stretches at the barre and before you know it you will be hooked. We recommend taking class 3-5 times per week to get the best results. Find your local studio: https://barmethod.com/find-a-studio/
7. Bring a Friend
There’s nothing more fun than witnessing your friend shake through a set of thigh exercises. Everyone remembers their first time! Although excruciating, the burn and the shake are things we learn to love and crave. So, do your friends a favor and invite them into your secret hiding place! Besides, it’s no lie that friends that shake together, stay together.
