Tips for Bar Method Class

April 8, 2019

We all have different reasons for taking class within the four beautiful walls of The Bar Method studio. But for many of us, we want to see and feel results. Whether you want to feel less stressed, or tighten up your core, the best way to feel and see these results is to make the most of your time in Bar Method class. Here to give her tips on how to do this is blogger and Bar Method Dr. Phillips Instructor, Laura. Let’s see what tips Laura has to share:

We all know working out is hard. Although this is true, it can also be so rewarding if you invest everything you can into it. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard people complain about having to workout like they didn’t have the choice. The only way you’re going to see change in your body is if you put in the time and dedication to making the decision to just do it! I’m going to share a few tips that help me when taking my Bar Method classes. Hopefully they’ll resonate with you to use during your next class.

The Want

First things first, you have to want to go to class and workout! If you’re just going to say you did it, you are going for the wrong reason. I know we all have our reasoning for wanting to take class, but if you’re taking the hour out of your day, don’t you want it to mean something? Show up with the urgency to really push yourself to your max.

Have Fun

I don’t know about you, but I enjoy class a million times more if I’m having fun doing it! This might be the most important tip, because if you’re enjoying pushing your limits throughout the positions, you’re going to feel great doing the exercise. This will ultimately lead you to wanting to do it more often! It’s all about those endorphins being released. It’s a mental game! So try to put a smile on your face the next time you’re in class and not take it so seriously.

Being an instructor, I personally appreciate this aspect from clients more than you probably think it matters. Just listen! It is one of the easiest things we can do while taking class. This doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, it will actually help you. Now, I know not everyone’s mind- body connection is the same. For some it comes super easy, and for others it’s more of a struggle and that’s okay. That is why we’re there- to help guide you through the exercises throughout class. It’s so easy to fall into the habit of going on auto pilot. The only thing is auto pilot doesn’t work in Bar Method classes because they’re all different, and it takes mental focus to really make it meaningful. This tool is key especially when you are not facing the instructor. For example: facing into the barre or when you face down to the floor in pushups. Instead of looking around the entire room to see what others are doing, try to simply listen to what is being said and focus on yourself and the instructor. This will do wonders for your class, I promise you!

Dress the Part

This may seem silly, but do you ever think about your attire you choose to wear into class?  I know it’s not necessarily a fashion show, but I can personally tell you when I feel cute, I work harder. It’s a proven fact that if you like what you see in the mirror, you’re going to feel better about yourself. So dress the part! Wear layers if you want to feel a little more covered to and from classes. Pick out a cute pair of socks to coordinate with your look. These are really easy things to make you feel better about yourself. In the end it will lead you to seeing results faster too, because you’ll work harder feeling good about yourself.

Appreciate Yourself

Lastly, be proud of yourself and what you put forth during your workout. Everyday will feel different. Every class will be different. Each time you physically show up, mentally SHOW UP as well. Earn that sense of accomplishment! Give yourself the pat on the back you deserve. Showing up for class is half the battle, but show that class who’s boss and master each and every position. Yes, you’ll get tired, but if you keep pushing yourself that tad bit extra, you will feel so good once it’s completed.

So take these tips in with you to class tomorrow. Maybe you already apply all of these while taking class. Even if you do, I bet if you thoughtfully keep them in your head you will work a little harder until the very end. Give yourself the best effort you can, because you deserve it!
