Celebrating 25 Years of The Bar Method: Built on Strength, Driven by Innovation

Twenty-five years ago, a single studio opened its doors in San Francisco with a simple but powerful vision: to create a workout that was challenging, effective, and accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
Since then, millions of tiny moments have unfolded inside our studios – first classes, breakthrough moments, lifelong friendships, and quiet reminders that we’re capable of more than we imagined.
And today, that vision has grown into nearly 100 studios across the United States, Canada, and Japan, thousands of clients, and a community helping people discover strength that goes far beyond the barre.
As we celebrate The Bar Method’s 25th anniversary, we’re reflecting on the milestones that shaped our journey, the innovation that has kept us moving forward, and the incredible people who have made it all possible.
A Legacy of Innovation
Over the past 25 years, fitness trends have come and gone. Through it all, The Bar Method has remained rooted in something timeless: intelligent movement, exceptional instruction, and a community that keeps people coming back.
Our longevity isn’t the result of standing still. It’s the result of knowing what should never change and having the courage to evolve everything else. While our commitment to safe, effective movement has remained constant, we’ve continually innovated to meet the changing needs of our clients. From opening our first franchise and expanding into at-home workouts to launching new class formats and introducing Pilates, each milestone reflects our dedication to helping more people experience the lasting benefits of The Bar Method.

The Vision That Started It All
The Bar Method began with founder Burr Leonard’s passion for movement and her belief that exercise could transform not only the body, but also the way people feel about themselves.
After discovering the Lotte Berk Method while living in New York, Burr experienced remarkable results and began envisioning a workout that would be equally effective while placing an even greater emphasis on safety and proper alignment. Working alongside a team of physical therapists, she refined every movement to better protect the joints while maximizing muscle engagement long before functional movement and joint health became mainstream conversations.
She also developed a teaching philosophy inspired by her father George Leonard’s book Mastery, believing that lasting results come from consistency, encouragement, and continual progress rather than perfection. That belief still shapes every class today, reminding clients that meaningful change comes from showing up again tomorrow.
When the first The Bar Method studio opened in San Francisco in 2001, it introduced a workout unlike any other. Burr believed fitness could be both demanding and supportive. You could challenge your muscles to the point of shaking, improve your posture and strength, and leave class feeling stronger, more confident, and ready for whatever came next. For many, that unmistakable shake became part of the journey.
That philosophy continues to guide every class we teach today.
Always Evolving
While the foundation of The Bar Method has remained remarkably consistent, innovation has always been part of our DNA.
As our community grew, so did the ways people could experience The Bar Method. We expanded beyond our signature class to meet clients wherever they were in life, because we know that while life changes, the desire to feel strong, healthy, and confident doesn’t.
Express gave busy schedules no excuse to skip self-care.
Restore and Flow created space to recover, improve mobility, and reconnect with movement.
Strength offered new ways to challenge both body and mind while staying rooted in our signature technique.
Mixed combined the best of our formats into one dynamic experience, bringing variety while preserving the precision and results that define The Bar Method.
Our commitment to innovation extended beyond the studio walls as well. From workout DVDs to online streaming classes, we’ve continually found new ways to bring The Bar Method into our clients’ lives, making it easier to stay connected to the practice they love, wherever they are.
And in our 25th year, we’re proud to introduce the next chapter: Bar Method Pilates. Built on the same principles of intentional movement, expert instruction, and exceptional results, Pilates expands the ways we can help our clients move well, build strength, and feel their best for years to come.
While our formats and technology have evolved over the past 25 years, our purpose has never changed: to help people build strength for life, adapting alongside them through every season, milestone, and new beginning.
More Than a Workout
The Bar Method has always been about more than physical results.
Our technique strengthens every major muscle group through precise movements that create muscular endurance, improve posture, increase flexibility, and build balanced strength. Clients of all ages—from their 20s to their 70s and beyond—continue to discover that meaningful results come from consistency rather than intensity alone.

But ask almost any longtime client what keeps them coming back, and they’ll likely tell you it isn’t just the workout.
It’s the confidence that comes from accomplishing something you once thought was impossible.
It’s realizing the movement that once felt impossible has become second nature.
It’s returning after time away and discovering your strength is still there.
It’s that final challenging set when your muscles are shaking and the person next to you quietly says, “Almost there.”
These moments have played out in our studios every day for the past 25 years – and they’re the reason so many people keep coming back.
The Community That Built The Bar Method
While Burr Leonard created the method, it is our community that has made The Bar Method what it is today.
Our clients, instructors, and studio owners come from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and walks of life, yet they share a common mindset: a commitment to growth, wellness, and supporting those around them.
After experiencing the impact of The Bar Method firsthand, many clients become instructors. Those instructors become studio owners. And those studio owners build communities where lives are changed.
Today, our network of passionate studio owners—predominantly women entrepreneurs—continues to inspire one another while creating welcoming spaces where everyone feels encouraged to pursue their strongest, healthiest selves.
Together, they’ve built more than a fitness brand. They’ve built a community where lifelong friendships are formed, milestones are celebrated, and every person is empowered to become stronger than they thought possible.
Looking Ahead
Celebrating 25 years isn’t just about looking back. It’s about honoring the foundation we’ve built while embracing what’s next.

As we continue to evolve, we’ll remain committed to thoughtful innovation, exceptional instruction, and creating workouts that challenge, support, and empower every client who walks through our doors.
New generations will discover us. New instructors will inspire. New communities will grow.
But the heart of what we do will never change.
It’s never just been about the barre. It’s about the people who show up beside it.
To every client who walked through our doors for the first time. Every instructor who encouraged someone through one more set. Every studio owner who built a community. Every friendship, every comeback, every personal milestone, and every moment of strength we’ve shared together—thank you.
For 25 years, you’ve helped shape The Bar Method into what it is today.
Here’s to the next 25 years of moving with purpose. The best is still to come.
