Why Is Barre a Good Workout? Hint: Every Second Counts

April 29, 2026

When life gets busy, every single moment counts. Whether you’re investing time in your work, wellbeing, or working out, the goal is to reach the best result possible efficiently (so you can spend more time enjoying what matters most!). Enter: Barre classes — a chance to strengthen your mind-body connection, work all muscles in the body, improve posture over time…and so much more. So, if you’re wondering: Is barre a good workout? The short answer is yes. But why is it a good workout, and what exactly makes it so effective? That’s what we’ll explore in this blog.

We’ll cover:

  • Why does barre work?
  • What are the advantages of barre over other workouts?
  • Does barre help you lose weight?
  • Is barre good for strength training?
  • And more!

Does barre work — really?

Is barre a good workout? It’s a great question, especially if you’re exploring workout options and considering barre. (We’re big on doing our research, too!) The simple answer is that yes, barre is a good workout. But there’s even more to the story…

While some workouts are unenjoyable, hard on the body, or a seemingly never-ending upward battle to get results, that’s not the case with The Bar Method — at all. Here, every class is a reminder of just how capable your body is, and nothing quite compares to the physical and mental satisfaction that comes with that.

Here are just a few of the reasons barre not only works, but works wonders (when done consistently over time):

  • Each barre class is designed to keep you moving, with a fusion of strength training, cardio exercise, stretching, yoga, Pilates, and ballet. Going through the motions simply doesn’t happen during barre class — every single movement counts.
  • Modifications are offered throughout barre classes, making them accessible for people across all experience levels to get in an optimal workout. Plus, barre instructors always are rooting for you to succeed, with expert training in anatomy that allows them to teach proper form for real results.
  • The workout is both low-impact and high-intensity, meaning you don’t have to choose one over the other. Our Method was created with physical therapists and kinesiologists, with joint health, sustainable fitness, and an optimal level of physical challenge all in mind.

Bar Method students are taking a class. Each student is holding onto the bar with their left hand while lifting their right leg off the ground and reaching their right arm overhead while holding a weight.

What are the advantages of barre compared to other workouts?

Certain workouts (like weight lifting, walking, and Pilates) all offer specific benefits to the body, but barre strategically incorporates a wide range of exercises and movements for a full-body workout that covers all the bases. Barre exercises target stabilizer muscles, which connect to the joints and are integral to range of motion, laying the groundwork for a healthy, strong body overall.

While certain workouts are done solo, during barre classes, you’re guided through every movement by a highly trained teacher who supports your progress, encourages you, and provides form adjustments as needed. (After class, you can always practice and refine exercises at home as well!)

Barre also uses a specialized order of operations that’s oriented around results, rather than simply checking exercises of a list. For example, push-ups are a universal exercise, but the alignment of a Bar Method push-up is specific, along with how many push-ups total are allowed per class and where they go in the context of class.

Here’s what the reviews say about barre

The benefits of barre are slightly different for everyone, but one thing’s for sure: Barre is truly transformative. Don’t just take it from us — check out these reviews to get a sense of what the advantages look like for members at The Bar Method.

  • “I love that instructors take the time to get to know you by name and go out of their way to give you corrections so you can get the most out of every exercise. I always feel like they are cheering me on to push past my own personal limits.” —Kelly, Chicago
  • “From the first day I walked in, all the staff members were extremely friendly and welcoming. They even learned my name right away. I like that the teachers challenge me and correct me on my form so that I am doing it correctly and not hurting myself.” —Crystal, Tampa

You’ve read the reviews. Now, let’s dive into how barre classes can lead to results like weight loss, strength, toning, and definition.

Results that count

Your personal goals are, well, personal. Whether you’re interested in a workout that helps with weight loss or strength, or offers a mood or confidence boost, barre is a path built for results. Every breath, moment, and posture matters, whether you take a 45- or 60-minute barre class.

In a Bar Method class, no movement is wasted, and no rest is random. The entire structure is engineered to keep your body working intelligently and efficiently — making “every moment count” not just a nice phrase, but a lived experience in every class. Every time you show up for class, the class will be one of a kind, but the spirit and goals are always the same.

Now, let’s talk about some of the most common questions about barre and results.

Is a barre workout good for the body long-term?

Yes! If you’ve heard of being in a “flow state,” think of a barre class the same way. Not only is every moment safe for the joints and engaging for the muscles (low-impact and high-intensity), but the class sequence itself moves in sync with the body’s rhythms. This makes the class flow naturally and gracefully, keeping your mind in the present moment as you focus on each posture. It’s safe enough to do every day (even for the next 20 years), benefitting both body and mind.

Here’s how it works: A Bar Method class utilizes seamless transitions with minimal rest. Class flows from one section to the next (starting with a warm-up, then thigh work, then seat work, then curl work) with brief transitions to keep your heart rate elevated. Each transition is long enough to allow just enough muscular recovery so you can approach each new section with focus and energy.

Example: After burning out your quads in a thigh work, you take a transition stretch for your quads (standing stretch and stretch under the bar) and then transition to setting up for seat work. This pause feels small — but it’s just right to reset without losing the workout’s intensity. This stretch also happens at the perfect time in class to help increase flexibility, after the muscles have been worked.

Is barre good for weight loss?

If you’re interested in losing weight, you may be wondering, “Does barre help you lose weight?” Bar Method classes paired with a healthy diet can help with weight loss goals, if that’s something you’re working toward.

Taking classes regularly can improve overall health and fitness, as well as burn fat — among other benefits like improved flexibility and posture. Consistency is a key part of a barre weight loss plan, and the National Library of Medicine recommends working out for more than the basic health recommendation of 150 minutes per week to help with weight loss and to maintain results.

Is barre good for strength training?

If building strength or muscle toning and definition are important to you, you may have questions like, “Is barre good for strength training?” Actually, barre is strength training. It physically pushes your body to the next level through every movement and repetition. While each class helps build strength, we recommend our Bar Strength class format, which includes increased weight work and leads to defined muscles over time

What muscles does barre work?

  • The pecs
  • The outer quads
  • The triceps
  • The hamstrings
  • The lower quads
  • The abdominals
  • The hip abductors
  • And many more! (Barre is a full-body workout)

Why barre is the perfect workout for a busy lifestyle

Between appointments, events, errands, and your personal life, schedules can fill up quickly. While health, wellness, and fitness are always a priority, sometimes they fall to the bottom of the list for a while. But it doesn’t need to stay that way — there’s a way for these non-negotiables to fit seamlessly into an active life. With this in mind, barre makes it convenient to prioritize your body and mind on a regular basis. Simply put, it’s one building block that’s part of a larger life you can feel good about.

So, what is the best barre schedule for results? While that will look slightly different for everyone (depending on what your particular goals are), we recommend taking classes at least two to three times per week.

Our Method includes five class formats that emphasize different facets of health, fitness, and wellness. Our classes come in different formats, at different times, and different lengths to make it simple for your schedule. These include:

  • Bar Method
  • Bar Method Cardio
  • Bar Strength
  • Bar Flow
  • Bar Restore

In each class type, instructors efficiently work the entire body and include stretching all within 60 minutes (or its 45 minute Express counterpart), making every single minute count. Quick note: 60-minute classes feature more of what makes each format great, like additional stretch sequences, active exercises, weights, or thigh, seat, and ab work.

If you tend to be busy, barre classes are the perfect opportunity to work major muscle groups to fatigue while strengthening the (often overlooked) supporting players. The result? The body stays balanced and is less prone to injury.

Reimagine fitness with barre

To recap, barre works for many different reasons. By targeting the full body through a powerful series of postures, it’s an all-in-one workout that makes the most of the time you have. So, whether you have 45 minutes or 60 minutes, you can rest assured that every moment counts toward the results you want at The Bar Method. With consistent practice, barre leads to benefits that extend well beyond fitness, like greater confidence, standing a little taller (literally), and as one barre enthusiast says: “becoming the best version of yourself.”
